January 2019 Superintendent Monthly Memo

Welcome back from what was hopefully a restful break! As we celebrate our second new year, the first of course being the opening of the school year in the world of education, I hope you are looking forward to a great new calendar year in education!

Budget Updates
The Superintendent’s Budget will be officially presented to the full School Committee on January 10, 2019.  After it is presented it becomes the School Committee’s budget until it is formally adopted in March of 2019.  I will be attending a staff meeting in each school over the winter to go over the budget in detail.

MSBA Update
The vote for the School Building Project will take place on Saturday April 6, 2019.

There will be community evenings to discuss the building project on the following dates:

  • March 7th 5-6:30 at Kittredge followed by 7-8:30 at Becket (snow date March 21st)

Please contact Laurie Casna or Aaron Robb if you are interested in getting more involved!

Personnel Updates

  • District Treasurer, Mike Kinney is retiring after several years of service to the district.  We thank Mr. Kinney and wish him well.
  • I have accepted the resignation of Heather LaFogg, Craneville Paraprofessional. We thank Heather for her years of service to CBRSD.
  • I have accepted the resignation of Maya Close, special education teacher at Nessacus Regional Middle School.  We thank Maya for her service to our students.  We have posted for a special education teacher at Nessacus Regional Middle School, preferably for someone with experience working with students with intensive needs.
  • Congratulations are in order to Nathan Loux, Craneville Vice Principal and his family on the birth of his daughter Naomi.

Professional Advancement Opportunity
There will be two representative from MCLA’s licensure program to meet with staff interested in a degree completion program to earn a Bachelor’s Degree and ultimately a teaching license as well as educators who are already licensed and are interested in earning an additional teaching license in special education.  They will be on site on Tuesday January 8th in the library at Nessacus at 3:30 to meet with all interested staff.  This is an awesome opportunity to learn the steps you need to take to get certified in special education and work directly with MCLA representatives willing to offer programming off campus.

Below is the information from the previous memo:
I have been in contact with Barbara Emanuel from the licensure program at MCLA.  She is going to be in CBRSD to meet with any staff interested in obtaining licensure as a moderate special education teacher.  She will be able to work with individuals based on their amount of schooling to date etc. to determine the quickest pathway to licensure. This is a great opportunity for paraprofessionals, tutors or other staff members in the district interested in obtaining a teaching license.  It is also a good opportunity for teachers interested in getting a second license in special education.  You are also welcome to share this with others in the community who may be interested including substitutes.

Professional Development
Cornelius Minor, author of We Got This will be the Keynote presenter for our 2019-20 school year opening day! Many of our staff have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Minor through his work in the Literacy Institute through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Nessacus Regional Middle School is participating in.  Mr. Minor will be consulting with us leading up to the opening day to start some of the work he will be leading on opening day.

To learn more about the inspiring work of Mr. Minor and how it fits into the work we are doing in CBRSD consider following Cornelius on Twitter at @misterminor or reading his book, We Got This, on Equity, Access and the Quest to be Who Our Students Needs Us to Be.
